EN standards explained

All of the products that we sell on materials4me are produced to a predefined standard. EN stands for European norm and details the features of the product.

Some examples of the details in an EN Spec are:

  • Dimensional tolerances (e.g. how long or flat the products are)
  • Mechanical properties (how strong or hard a product is)
  • Chemical properties (what is the product made from)
  • Finish (what is or is not acceptable on the surface, or how its treated or finished)
  • Manufacturing method (how the product is made)
  • Testing processes and equipment

The EN standards replaced many national standards such as BS or DIN that were in use in the past.

Why do we use EN standards?

Using a common standard across Europe – and further afield as some of these standards are effectively global – makes life easier for a variety of reasons:

  • All products are made to the same specification
  • Ensures standard performance of products
  • Improves the quality and safety of products and their manufacture
  • EN standards reduce the environmental impact of product manufacture
  • Make trading products internationally simpler, which benefits the consumer

You can find out more about EN standards and standards in general at the following websites:
