Metals – the best all-round materials

For many applications metal is the only option as other materials do not have the necessary properties. In thyssenkrupp’s materials4me online shop you can choose between aluminum, steel and stainless steel. Each metal has particular benefits and disadvantages which will affect your choice.

Steel

Steel is a metal with great all-round properties. With its outstanding strength it is recommended in particular for building projects. It can be readily fabricated and welded into almost any shape.

However, simple steels display low resistance to corrosion. Rust quickly becomes an issue, but there are good solutions for this.

Aluminum

Aluminum is much lighter than steel, with a weight advantage of around 3:1. Aluminum is more resistant to environmental influences than simple steel and is easier to form.

Aluminum fabrications are often assembled using threaded fasteners or rivets. A good method of joining aluminum parts is welding, but because of the fumes good ventilation must be ensured.

Stainless steel (V2A)

In many structures weight is not important, so it doesn’t necessarily have to be aluminum. However if corrosion resistance is important, stainless steel is often the right choice. It can be easily processed and the surface doesn’t have to be treated.
